Bookstores For Us |
 |
Our Favorite Bookstores | LGBT Friendly Stores
| The
bookstores listed below are ones that have responded to a survey I
am sending out to every LGBT and every independent brick and
mortar bookstore I can find listed on the Internet. The stores
listed under “Indies” have all indicated they are LGBT friendly
and if they do not have the book you are looking for, they will be
glad to special order it (some with qualifications – you’ll need
to check with the store itself). Any store listed with a
beside it has specifically identified as an LGBT store.
I’ve spent the time to compile this list because I think it is
extremely important to:
A) give our hard earned dollars to the stores that support us,
especially the stores that specifically identify as LGBT, and
B) keep our dollars in our local communities as much as possible.
I found the following about shopping local and would like to share
it here:
|
Why shop Local?
When you shop at an independently owned business, your entire
community benefits:
1. Spend $100 at a local shop and $68 of that stays in your
community. Spend the same $100 at a national chain, and your
community only sees $43.
2. Local businesses create higher-paying jobs for our
neighbors.
3. More of your taxes are reinvested in your community--where
they belong.
4. Buying local means less packaging, less transportation, and
a smaller carbon footprint.
5. Shopping in a local business district means less
infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money to beautify
your community.
6. Local retailers are your friends and neighbors—support them
and they’ll support you.
7. Local businesses donate to charities at more than twice the
rate of national chains.
8. More independents means more choice, more diversity, and a
truly unique community. |
If there is not an LGBT or LGBT-friendly bookstore in your area or
you decide to shop on the internet for whatever reason, I again
ask you to spend your money at the companies that support us.
Amazon.com does not even though they carry many of the LGBT titles
you may be searching for. Please go
directly to the publisher of the book you are looking for to see
if you can purchase it from them.
This list is FAR from complete or exhaustive. In fact, once I have
contacted as many stores as I possibly can and have all of the
stores willing to be listed here, this list won’t be complete.
With the economy in flux the way it is and with more and more
people shopping online rather than within their community, stores
either close or change their focus. I will be trying to stay in
constant contact with the stores so I can keep this list as
up-to-date as possible. It is a good idea to always call ahead and
be sure the store you are choosing is still open, especially if
you are going to be traveling any distance to get there.
Those stores marked (Favorite!)

| I've been
buying books at Bookwoman since the early eighties when I first
discovered it. Susan has gone to incredible lengths to keep this
treasure open and it is the only one left in Texas. Bookwoman is
a gathering place for all women and has been a staunch supporter
of the lesbian community since its inception. Even with the gift
of an e-reader for Christmas, this bookstore will continue to
get most of my book buying money. Bookwoman is a very special
place. |

I don't have
a favorite independent book store in my area. I found this one
on the 'books for us' link. I plan on checking it out next time
I am in OKC. |

| Ruta and
staff have gone the extra mile to have her store stocked with
the most interesting reading materials. She and her staff are
well read and informed and make very good at suggestions as to
what to read. I've found books and authors previously unknown
and that are now treasures. Ruta holds many events in her store
and is a very involved person. |

Because they
are owned by two female entrepreneurs who have struggled to keep
the store open during the tough times and have managed to
succeed. It is just big enough to have a good selection without
being a box store. |

| Gosh, I'd
have to say that when I first started to realize what was
happening in my life and looking for information, it was
suggested that I visit Women and Children First. It's a very
warm and friendly neighborhood bookstore. The employees are all
very considerate and helpful. You can easily ask a question and
know they will be as helpful as possible and even go out of
there way if need be. This was the first place I started to buy
Lesbian novels and it is still the best place around with a
wonderful selection of Lesbian and Gay as well as social issues.
Besides those areas, they have a wonderful children section as
well as a good size area of various categories of books. Besides
all this, they are very much in the forefront of gay advocacy
and other important issues. Every month they have special
programs and book clubs for women and kids. It really is a neat
place and I think if you were to visit Chicago, you'd enjoy a
visit there as well. |

These indie
bookstore owners, who carry a lot of mainstream mysteries and
thrillers, also goes out of their way to find and feature GLBT
works of crime fiction. They're knowledgeable about what's out
there, and they are excellent resources for their gay and
lesbian shoppers, always supportive, always helpful. They'll
also order books if they don't have them in the store. They are
generous and welcoming to GLBT mystery writers as well, and
they're just so open, welcoming, and kind that they deserve
praise and accolades.
www.onceuponacrimebooks.com is their website. |

Let me count the ways...
-The people at Antigone always order books I want if they don't
have them. They don't act like it's a problem. And they call me
and tell me that they're in.
-They have many different book groups and readings.
-They have a childrens section and they have toys in it for kids
to play with while mom's or dad's look around.
-They email discounts and promotions like giving 10% off if you
say "Happy International Women's Day" (On International Women's Day)
-They have cool gifts other than books.
-They ask readers for book recommendations and show readers and
store employee's picks with little tags. |

Gulf of Maine Books
Brunswick, ME |
I like this
store because they have a wide variety of books. Lots of books
about Maine, a huge poetry and glbt section. It is also only
about 30 miles from my house.
There is a Mr. Paperback in my home town, and I go there
sometimes too, as they also have a lgbt section and I can grab a
cup of coffee there. Gulf of Maine Books does not have a cafe,
but there are some nice little cafe's within walking distance in
the area. |

Giovanni's Room is great!
The store is small enough to have that
comfortable, cozy, personal feel, but large enough to carry all the
latest LGBT books. If there is a book you want that they don't have
in stock, they will go to all lengths to get it for you.
Since I am no longer a Philly resident, I shop Giovanni's Room
on-line. Skip and Ed are so helpful and gracious. If there is ever a
problem or question about my order, they contact me immediately via
e-mail or by phone. Even in this day and age of electronic
impersonal communication, the folks at Giovanni's Room know what
excellent customer service is and how to provide it!
They're tops in my book! :-) |

Mystic, CT |
The
ONLY LGBT friendly bookstore in Connecticut is Bank Square
Books in Mystic, Connecticut. I am glad you had that list,
Glenda. Now I know there are 3 in Massachusetts so if I
ever get the time and wanderlust to go traveling, I know where
to find an independent bookseller. I would certainly make it a
point to stop by when I am in the area. |

Although I'm not the owner and have nothing at stake, I take
any opportunity available to promote Pride & Joy. I have had
nothing but positive experiences there. The staff has always gone
above and beyond to assist customers. The store has been around
since the early 90s and, as far as I know, is the only LGBT
bookstore in the area.
Pride & Joy does carry books - the front quarter of the store is
books and there's a magazine rack in the rear. There's a children's
section and a selection for tweens/teens. There are used books,
which is a great way to discover "new" authors. The turnover in
titles is decent. But they also carry DVDs, CDs, T-shirts, gifts,
jewelry, souvenirs, stickers and trinkets. You can also get
information and/or tickets for community events.
I mostly deal with two of the three owners when I visit. Melissa
and Kelly are awesome. If they're not stocking something I want,
they'll order it from their suppliers. If their suppliers can't
provide it, they'll move heaven and earth to get it, including contacting the author.
They've also been right on the money with authors they've suggested
I might like.
One of the perks is that this shop is located in downtown
Northampton, which is a vibrant, thriving community filled with
fantastic restaurants, art exhibits, theaters, small retailers and
one-of a-kind shops. There are usually musicians busking on the
sidewalks. Let’s not forget the guilty pleasures
of having a smoosh-in at Herrell’s Ice Cream. A visit to Pride &
Joy can easily be turned into a day out.
If you're looking for something more mainstream, Odyssey Books is
not that far, they’re located in South Hadley.
They’re probably more in line with what people tend to think of when
they think independent bookseller. But if used or rare books are
more your thing, Sage Books and Heritage Books are almost across the
street from each other in Southampton. Sage is a century old house
with 11 rooms of bookshelves and seating (as well as a couple of
cats), while Heritage is in the old town library.
You can walk away with a couple of huge bags filled to the brim with
bargains at either (or both) of those locations.
All these stores do have websites and sell online as well:

There is always a lot going on there. They have book clubs,
including one for a cookbook potluck where we try out different
cookbooks before buying them. They have authors in for readings,
discussions, and signings. Every week they have 3 children's story
times. The employees put the customers first. They will help you
to find what you want, including special ordering anything not in
stock. Their children's section is fantastic. It includes books,
educational materials, toys, parenting books, gift items, etc. A
great bookstore. I practically live there. |

Now Voyager is my favorite place to shop for lesbian fiction.
Mark, the owner, is a low key guy but he is always friendly and
helpful.
My partner and I get to Provincetown 3 or 4 times a year. Mark
always remembers us and greets us warmly. We feel like old friends.
Now Voyager is also very welcoming of visiting authors. Mark hosts
many book signings each year, including several each year during
Women's Week. |

Barnes and Noble Carrollwood
Tampa, FL |
Sorry, but there are no independent bookstores
I call worthy in Tampa.
Barnes and Noble Carrollwood isn't your ordinary B&N. Nancy Barbara
is an exceptional customer relations manager, making her store extra available
to host the "little authors" with as much enthusiasm as she does the
big guys. And she makes it a point to include as many lesbian
authors in her store for book signings as well as stocking the books
on the shelves. She is one of "us." With a no-nonsense but gentle
touch with readers and authors, Nancy Barbara and Barnes and Noble
Carrollwood make author and reader alike, feel at home and that they
are special. They are the independent bookstore
of choice for me. The fact that her store is part of a book chain,
is besides the point. |

Antigone Books is a local bookstore along the "funky" shopping
district known as 4th Avenue in Tucson.
The book store is owned by women, is very LGBT friendly and is just
a great place to browse! The book store hosts several book clubs,
hosts author events, has trivia contests, has an eclectic mix of
books, journals, green products, some music, and fun stuff. One
entire window is covered with posters and flyers of local events.
The store has been around forever and they have many loyal
customers. The staff is friendly and often write brief narratives
on bookmarks and place them inside books so browsers can get a
personal glimpse about what is so special about that particular
book. They do go out of their way to order books that are not in stock. If I happen to be in
another book store and see a book that is of interest, I always go
to Antigone next and either ask them to order the book for me or I
will place an order through their website.
http://antigonebooks.com/
I am currently unemployed, so I don't go there quite as often as I
would like, because I may go into Antigone empty handed, but find
it hard to leave the same way! |

Wake Forest, NC |
Drew, the owner of Storytellers, is one of the nicest people
you’ll ever meet. He has made his store a place to meet and to
curl up with a good book. He offers book clubs space to meet,
hosts readings on a regular basis, and encourages reading in
young people. |
